St. Stephens Retirement Center was incorporated in 1979 and its first facility was funded by a 202 HUD housing grant, which was completed in 1994. Today, SSRC has two senior residential projects valued at just under 16 million dollars. Notably SSRC was the first African-American owned Senior Residential facility in the state of California to be awarded a 202 housing grant. SSRC's first facility called the Lazzell Residence located is located at 5625 Imperial Ave. San Diego, CA 92114.
Our first center is comprised of 60 units of affordable housing. Our second facility called Jean C. McKinney Manor was named after the late wife of our founder Bishop George Dallas McKinney was completed in 2005 in partnership with one of the largest and most successful financial firms in the United States focusing on financing affordable housing projects. It is important to note that Jean C. McKinney Manor was awarded the Sage Award for being the best built affordable housing complex in the nation.
